When substance abuse ends, there is still a tremendous amount of repair that has to take place for the rest of the family to heal. We work with parents to begin that process of rectification and healing. Our goal is to prepare young men to take advantage of their newfound sobriety in many ways. This includes developing loving, respectful relationships with their parents, siblings, and other family members.
What Is Family Programming?
New Life House understands how important it is to teach our residents a new way of interacting with their families. This benefits everyone by teaching the entire family how to communicate more effectively, both during treatment and after they complete it. Family members can accomplish things like resolving past conflicts, learning not to engage in codependent behavior, and understanding how to provide optimal support for the young man in recovery.
If you have a son coming to New Life House sober living in Los Angeles, we invite you to look at it as joining a family, rather than sending him away to a program. Every step of the way, we involve, engage, and include our families. New Life House is not a place where young men are dropped off and families are forgotten. We provide a home away from home that involves everyone in the recovery process.
How Our Family Programming Works
Our Family Programming involves several steps designed to bring our young men closer to their families. These include:
90-Day New Parent Program
When a family first arrives, they participate in our 90-Day New Parent Program. This includes weekly groups with Irina Jodzio and the other new families and serves as an amazing opportunity not just to participate in a powerful group, but build new relationships with other families.
Parent Guide Program
Family programming at New Life House starts right away. As soon as a young man goes through the intake process, a family is assigned a set of Parent Guides. Parent Guides are peer mentors that become a line of support as well as offer friendship while a young man is going through the New Life House process. There are also weekly telephone updates at the beginning of the journey, to keep you up to date on the progress, successes, and struggles of your son’s recovery. This allows the family to understand where their child is in their recovery journey.
Saturday Family Groups
One of the most impactful components of the New Life House family program is our Saturday programming. Irina Jodzio, LMFT runs a family group every other Saturday with our families and the young men in the program. This potluck event serves as an opportunity for everyone to connect and socialize with the other families in the program. The same camaraderie that we cultivate and foster with the guys in our Los Angeles sober living homes defines our family community. Additionally, we host a variety of larger family events throughout the year, including holidays, picnics, and get-togethers.
Parent passes are a great way for families to experience the change their son is undergoing. With a variety of fun activities to participate in throughout the surrounding South Bay of Los Angeles, families can enjoy spending quality time with their sons. These events allow the young men to feel connected to their families, as well as provide the families with an opportunity to see the progress the men have made.
Additional Support Resources for the Family
While the family programming at New Life House is comprehensive and thorough, we always recommend our families engage in additional support through outside groups.
12-Step programs like Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and CODA (Co-dependents Anonymous) offer valuable help for family members and loved ones of substance abusers. We often see families finding a tremendous amount of additional support in these groups, as well as fostering ongoing relationships.
Individuals in treatment also generally have more successful outcomes when their families are participating in these sorts of groups and taking care of themselves. Families are more likely to reestablish healthy relationships with their loved ones when they take advantage of support groups.
For these reasons, the staff at the New Life House Recovery Community strongly urges family members to become involved in additional addiction support programs. Look for meetings near you or virtual ones and involve as many family members as possible. Remember that if one meeting doesn’t feel like a good fit for you, try another one
