From Courtroom to Recovery: How Drug Court and Sober Living Work Together

When legal issues occur in someone’s life, it can not only be stressful but also make the future really unpredictable. The idea of going to jail can make anyone feel stressed, but drug court programs are becoming more common, and a second chance can be given. You might find yourself in legal trouble due to your substance abuse, so not only are you avoiding jail, but you also could change the course of your life in a sober living program.

What is Drug Court?

Drug court programs are an alternative to traditional criminal justice cases. Instead of going to a detention center or jail, you have the option to enter alcohol and drug rehabilitation treatment programs. When entering these programs, you can rehabilitate from your substance use and avoid jail time, which is often a contributing factor to the legal issues .

How do Drug Courts work?

Most drug court programs are an alternative sentencing option from the judge for drug-related crimes. The judge presiding over your case can place you in a drug court program after you enter a guilty plea, which may lead to reduced sentence time and charges after completing the program. This option enables you to tackle substance abuse issues, reduce your legal issues, and it can better prepare you to re-enter everyday life.

Dealing with legal processes can be confusing, but at New Life House, we can support you every step of the way. Whether it’s providing professional court letters, progress reports, or character reference letters. Our pretrial diversion and drug court team will also accompany you to court appearances and can help you coordinate with legal representation. We provide the necessary documentation of your participation and progress.

What are the Requirements to Successfully Complete Drug Court?

When enrolled in drug court and going through a substance abuse treatment program, you still have criteria that need to be met in addition to the regular program process.

What to Expect in a Drug Court?

  • Mandatory drug testing
  • Regular court appearances
  • Judicial supervision
  • Progress reports on growth within the program
  • Staying on track and participating in the program

Creating a stable, supervised living environment is important not only for your recovery but for your rehabilitation, too.

Does Drug Court Clear Your Record?

You can apply for your criminal charges to be dropped after you’ve successfully completed the drug court program, paid all of your court fees, and waited the required time period without any new arrests or convictions. The judge will determine if these charges will be cleared from your record based on your legal history, crime committed, and completion of the program.

What Happens if You Fail Drug Court?

If you consistently fall short of the requirements, do not complete the program, or fail a drug test, you could be removed from the treatment program, and the court can proceed with your original sentencing. You might be placed into custody, go to jail without a trial and be required to pay large fines associated with your charges.
