A loved one finally getting sober can be an exciting time for a family that has watched them struggle again and again trying to put their life together. So much so, that parents can be more eager than their children at times, for everything to get ‘back to normal’.

If you had asked me the difference between expectations and goals before I got sober, I am sure I would have given a convoluted explanation about my opinion between the two. But the truth was I had no idea.

Expectations. We all have them, particularly for our kids. I grew up keenly aware of my father’s expectations of me: college, maybe a graduate degree, then onto a promising career; perhaps even taking over his business. Nothing wrong with expectations as long as they don’t become oppressive and don’t give a boy the space to grow up and do what his inner voice calls him to do as a man.
