Over the years, drug testing has become more prevalent in a variety of situations: for pre-employment screenings, for drug rehab centers, for concerned parents. While drug testing has benefits, many argue that it is an ineffective (and expensive) tool. So how is drug testing useful?

Drug tests, even when used randomly are an effective tool when used in conjunction with a structured drug rehab program. However, by themselves, drug tests are considered a “quick fix,” and can give a parent a false sense of security and hope. Most alcohol and substance abusers are already of the mindset that they will do whatever it takes to have life continue on the way it has been and most have no plans to stop doing what they are doing. They would smoke toothpaste on a cigarette if they thought it would change the way they felt, so it makes perfect sense that hundreds of parents are reporting kids fake passing their drug screenings.

Marijuana addiction can start off slow but before you know it, its off and running.  For Pauletta’s son, Kyle, the addiction began sometime during his 11th and 12th grade years of high school.   It had become a ritual for Pauletta and her husband, David, to inspect his bedroom, locate the drugs, the bongs, papers, pipes and throw them all away.  They also performed random drug testing with the mindset that, if Kyle knew they were going to perform random drug testing, then he would stop using.
