What is Individual Therapy?
Substance abuse is an extremely personal struggle. It is hard on everyone it affects, but especially the individual working to overcome it. Many young men dealing with substance abuse feel trapped, and as though they don’t know how to change their behavior. This lack of control can be frustrating and can quickly lead to the development of a full-blown addiction. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options available for young men dealing with these struggles. Clear Recovery Center provides world class individualized therapeutic services for the young men of New Life House.
Individual therapy is one of the leading forms of evidence-based therapy used to treat a substance abuse problem, as well as many of the issues contributing to a young man being classified as failure to launch. It is conducted between a therapist and a patient in a one-on-one setting. Upon beginning individual therapy, the therapist will guide the patient through a discovery session so that they can learn as much about their background as possible. Gathering this information is vital so that the therapist knows how to steer the client going forward. Some examples of what information a therapist will want to obtain from the patient, specifically one who is seeking help for a substance use problem, will include, but is not limited to, the following:
- The length of time the substance abuse has been occurring
- How frequently substances are being abused and in what amounts
- What triggers the desire to want to abuse substances
- Feelings surrounding the substance abuse
Additionally, therapists will work with their client on identifying some of the emotional struggles that can lead them to being stuck in life. Depression, anxiety, trauma, and many other factors can play a role here, and all need to be addressed. Therapists will also take time to collect a rundown of the patient’s past mental health history and potentially information regarding their upbringing and current living conditions. Once the therapist has a good feel for what the patient is bringing to the table, they can work together to create a plan moving forward.
What Happens in Individual Therapy?
There are several things that can occur within a patient’s individual substance abuse therapy sessions. That is because each patient is unique in their own needs and often requires their own course of care. In most cases, however, individual therapy includes the use of other evidence-based therapies to help treat the not just the substance abuse problem, but the many other things that can be preventing a young man from moving forward, starting right at the root. This includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma therapies such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and other proven-effective therapies like motivational interviewing and contingency management.
Individual therapy for substance abuse is a highly personal process. So, generally, individuals will begin by meeting with their therapist on a weekly basis. This helps to continue the work that is being done within these sessions so that progress can keep being made. The young men in New Life House will generally work with their therapist on an ongoing basis as they work through their struggles and grow to a more healthy emotional state.
