Evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, holistic therapy individual therapy, and group counseling, have helped change the lives of millions of individuals who once battled substance abuse. While this approach to addiction treatment produces excellent results, it is also important to add in other layers to supplement and enhance someone’s recovery.

What is Holistic Therapy?

Holistic therapy is defined as a type of therapy that helps the “whole” person. This means that through this therapy, an individual can manage their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing in a natural way. Anyone can benefit from holistic therapy, however it should be noted that holistic therapy is most effective when paired with a traditional treatment plan that involves evidence-based therapies and possibly medication.

Types of Holistic Therapies

There are a number of different approaches to holistic therapy, all of which the young men in New Life House have an opportunity to benefit from through their work at Clear Recovery Center. In conjunction with behavioral and additional therapeutic work, these help young men build well-rounded, balanced lives. 

Some of the holistic therapies that the New Life House guys engage in include:

Experiential Programming

In addition to all of the traditional forms of holistic therapy, the New Life House guys participate in a wide range of exciting activities. Recovery is hardly sustainable if someone doesn’t believe it is possible to have fun, especially for young adults, and so at New Life House we get the guys plugged in to a variety of different activities that promote a fun, healthy lifestyle. Camping trips, rock climbing, surfing, hiking, and many other healthy activities are all enjoyed by the guys while they are residing at New Life House.

Mindfulness Practice

Mindfulness is a practice that helps individuals establish a peaceful, focused mind that is non-judgmental of any thoughts or physical feelings that may be occurring. The overarching goal of mindfulness practice is to develop a focus on the present moment exactly as it is without thinking about the past or the future. This makes mindfulness one of the most practiced techniques for those in recovery for substance use disorders as it can help curb cravings and calm anxiety (among many other things). Mindfulness can be practiced anywhere, as all it requires is a quiet, comfortable space where a person can collect their thoughts through the use of mindfulness.

Meditation

Similar to mindfulness, meditation helps bring individuals into the present moment. Meditation can be done both independently and guided. It can also be a reflective process where a concept or idea is reviewed and discussed. All the guys in New Life House start each day with a morning meditation, prior to eating breakfast with one another.

Breathwork

Breathwork is a guided process where a facilitator works with participants to control their breathing and become anchored in the present moment. There are numerous reported benefits to breathwork – not just emotionally and psychologically, but also physiologically, including reduced inflammation and other benefits.

Yoga

Yoga has long been one of the premier holistic treatments for mental health as well as substance abuse. It is widely popular not only because it hones in on the meditation and mindfulness aspects of holistic therapy, but also because it helps produce dopamine and other feel good neurotransmitters. The physical aspect of movement can also aid in promoting good health, such as eating well and exercising regularly. Of course, yoga also helps calm the mind, center thoughts and promotes positive feelings, safely and effectively.
