Why NLH Works
We understand that quality sobriety is about a life change, not just stopping substance abuse
Successful long-term sobriety is much more than abstinence from mind altering substances. We know that while stopping the cycle of addiction and negative behavior is certainly the first step into successful recovery, teaching our house members how to be responsible, mature, functional members of society is really the key to maintaining a lifetime of quality sobriety. Encouraging healthy, sober behavior is our top priority. We guide our members in discovering the issues which trigger them to use alcohol and drugs, and how to avoid these types of personal triggers in the future. We impart to them the life skills necessary to lead happy, sober lives and focus on character-building, self-esteem, honesty, and humility. Recovery becomes a way of life, not just a temporary state of being.
We understand the importance of positive peer interaction and support
Our houses are separated by age and we refer to this process as “peer grouping”. Peer grouping is a powerful tool as it allows house members to identify with others of the same age who have been through similar trials and shared common experiences. We also assign our more experienced and positive house members as “mentors” to guide the new house members as they enter into this new world of sobriety and recovery. While no longer isolated, each new house member gains personal growth, insight, and support. We also have in-house meetings, guided by our managers, which provide the opportunity for house members to give feedback to one another. By relating past experiences, they can offer positive solutions to everyday challenges.
We are a family
We try to foster a “family” feel and encourage camaraderie and friendship among our house members. We are strong in our belief that the more support one has in recovery, the better. A consistent and positive environment enables our members to feel safe and secure, which in turn allows them to make inroads into their fears, triggers, and issues surrounding addiction. Our houses are structured around ensuring that there is always plenty of support for the men in the house by having live-in, sober managers and staff available 24/7. From the daily shared house chores such as cleaning bathrooms or mowing lawns, to our weekly family barbeque and group outings to the movies and beach, our house members develop the strong bonds essential to successful, long-term sobriety.
We stay connected to graduates and our door is always open
Our graduates continue to return for house meetings, get-togethers, and visits long after they graduate from one of our houses. They know that they can always come to us with questions, concerns, or if they simply need someone to hear them out. Knowing that they have this support system aids them in continuing to stay sober. Unlike some places where an individual might finish treatment and then find themselves alone once again, our graduates are always surrounded by friends and support.
There is something very special about what happens at the New Life Houses
We invite you to see the magic for yourself by attending a Saturday family barbeque. Talk to the other parents, share your story, ask questions and find out just how special and effective the New Life Houses are. If you are out of state, please call us and we will connect you with current and past parents.
